FAQ’s for Youth Seeking a Summer Job
The Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas, in response to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is teaming up with local area businesses, government agencies, schools and social service agencies to help you get a job this summer. If you are between the ages of 16 and 24 years old and want to gain income, work experience and job skills this summer, please read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) below.
1. Q: How do I qualify for a summer job?
A: You must be a resident of Local Area IV (consisting of Sedgwick, Butler, Cowley, Sumner, Harper and Kingman counties), be between the ages of 16-24 at enrollment, and you must meet eligibility requirements, including meeting low income guidelines for your family. Other eligibility requirements may apply.
2. Q: Are there other requirements?
A: Yes. All youth invited to participate in the program will be required to attend the SYEP Training Workshops throughout their program participation. Attendance is mandatory for all assigned workshops in order to continue employment at your assigned worksite. You will be paid for attendance, and you must attend on each date assigned. These workshops will discuss topics that will help you have a successful summer work experience. To be admitted to the workshop, students must have submitted (to the Workforce Alliance) all of the completed forms that were given to them in their SYEP Packet, including a signed Social Security Card and a valid Kansas Identification Card or valid Kansas Driver’s License. Your packet will include the dates for you to bring all documents to the Workforce Center. Depending upon your job assignment, SYEP may need to conduct a background check. If the background check identifies any concerns, SYEP will contact you.
3. Q: How much will I earn and how will I get paid?
A: Youth will be paid a minimum of $7.25 an hour. Your pay will be loaded onto a debit card issued to you at the beginning of the program. You will be paid for the hours recorded on your timesheet. Payments are deposited every week. You will be paid for the hours at your worksite and the hours in training. You will need to record all of these hours appropriately in order to be paid.
4. Q: What types of jobs do you have available?
A: Jobs could include child care assistant, camp counselor, park aide, custodial, clerical, library page and teacher assistant among many others. SYEP tries to match you with your job preference, and takes into consideration where you live. However, there is no guarantee of where you will be assigned.
5. Q: What are the dates of the summer program?
A: The deadline for 2009 SYEP participants to reapply and reserve a slot for 2010 is March 15th. The deadline for 2010 SYEP applications is May 7th. Last day of employment for in-school youth will be August 6th. Last day of employment for out-of-school youth will be September 30th.
6. Q: How can I participate?
A: Please check this website often for the 2010 program application.
7. Q: How long will it be until I hear from you after I submit my application?
A: All applicants will receive notification by phone, email and/or mail once the selection process is complete.
