The recent Camp HYPE program, hosted by the Youth Employment Project (YEP), Workforce Alliance, and Sumner Economic Development, gave local students a close-up look at potential career paths. Fifteen students attended the four-day summer camp held at the Cowley College Sumner Campus.

Throughout the week, participants took part in hands-on workshops, interactive activities, and tours of area businesses. The goal of Camp HYPE is to introduce students to local industries, spark interest in high-demand careers, and help them explore future job opportunities. This year marked the second time the program has been offered in Sumner County.

“The Workforce Alliance is pleased to partner with Sumner County Economic Development to help develop a pipeline of skilled workers to support local job growth and business expansion,” said Stacy Cotten, Workforce Strategy Manager. “We want to thank the great employers that were part of Camp HYPE this week for sharing quality job opportunities and demonstrating the skills needed for careers in these industries.”

Local business tours included AAR Aircraft Services, a KanOkla presentation featuring their Traveling Exhibit, Cowley College’s EMT training facilities, the Wellington Police and Fire/EMT departments, and Elite Harness.

At Elite Harness, company president Nathan Smith personally guided students through the facility. The company manufactures custom wire harnesses and battery cables for a wide range of clients. Smith explained how Elite Harness has invested over $1 million to create a state-of-the-art production facility with an advanced research and development department.

“The camp provided a meaningful opportunity for us to connect with the next generation — young people who represent the future of our workforce and our community,” said Smith. “It was a great group of kids, and I personally enjoyed every moment spent engaging with them.”

In addition to gaining insight from local business leaders, students also received a $200 stipend for completing the camp. Financial sponsors included premier sponsor KanOkla, along with Pinnacle Aerospace and Sumner County Farm Bureau.

“As a proud member of the Wellington community, Elite Harness values partnerships with organizations like Camp HYPE that are making a real difference in the lives of local youth,” added Smith. “We look forward to continuing to support programs that inspire, educate, and empower.”
